Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye and caustic soda, is a white, inorganic compound that’s available in pellet, flake and granule form. Water soluble, sodium hydroxide is a strong chemical base thats widely used in pulp and paper, textiles, detergents and cleaners. In wastewater treatment applications, caustic soda is commonly used to neutralize acidic waste streams from industrial processes. Here, an EchoSpan ultrasonic level transmitter is installed on a bulk storage tank to measure the amount of sodium hydroxide available in a medical company’s wastewater treatment system. The company manufacturers prosthetic joints for hip and knee replacements. In the final stages of production, the parts are polished with high concentrations of phosphoric acid that must be neutralized prior to being released to the municipal sewer system. The corrosion resistant sensor provides reliable sodium hydroxide level measurement.
