EchoSwitch® Ultrasonic Level Switch & Controller

Application

The general purpose ultrasonic level sensor provides continuous level detection up to 26.2' (8m) with 3 programmable relays for level switch or level control functions, and is configured via the integral push button display module. Each relay can be configured on a single set point (high level alarm or low level alarm) or latched on two set points for automatic fill or empty in simplex (one pump or valve), duplex (two pumps) or triplex (three pumps) level control modes with selectable time delay and fail-safe logic. The embedded level controller can lower cost by replacing external control hardware. This non-contact liquid level sensor is ideally suited for corrosive, sticky or dirty liquids, and is broadly selected for pump lift station, sump and day tank level applications.

Hospital HVAC Water Level Measurement

Within the vast global market of HVAC usage, the U.S. market will grow about 3.2% through 2011 to a total of $16.8 billion. New commercial construction ($11 billion) and replacement of residential units ($5.8 billion) are credited as drivers for that growth. You may not realize it, but HVAC systems are an integral part of our every day lives. Homes, office buildings, industrial plants, airplanes, cars and computer technology all rely on complex HVAC systems to create and maintain safe, healthy as well as comfortable living and working environments. At a Northeast hospital an EchoSwitch II LU77 controls a HVAC cooling tower. This hospital relies on cooling and ventilation for its 200 patients as well as refrigeration of food and medical supplies. Reliability and accuracy are critical. Any system downtime can lead to reduced patients healthcare through poor ventilation, spoiled food or ineffective medicine. The EchoSwitch II offers continuous level detection and 3 programmable relays for switch, pump control and fail-safety. Its push-button display makes configuration quick and easy. You can simply program the sensor and walk away or if set points frequently vary, make changes on the fly with no downtime.

Reverse Osmosis Water Level Detection

Global reverse osmosis (RO) systems represent a $2.2 billion industry annually. The U.S. is the largest market comprising 55% of total global production or $1.21 billion. Industries that commonly use RO water include boiler feed water, beverage production and electronics manufacturing. In fact, many of the world's largest bottled water companies use RO as their prefered method of water filtration. RO is a preferred filtering method due to its simplicity and effectiveness of removing dissolved solids and other contaminants. RO works by applying pressure to unfiltered water on one side of a selectively permeable membrane. This membrane allows for only pure water to pass through the membrane to the other side while the remaining contaminated water is discharged. In this application an EchoSwitch II detects both low level and fill conditions. When the water level is low the EchoSwitch II signals a pump to fill the tank for continued production. When the FULL set point is achieved, the input valve is closed allowing for the water to be filtered, producing both wastewater and pure water. Once the filtration is complete the waste flush valve and product divert valve open and the RO process cycles again.

Ferric Chloride Tank Level Measurement

Transportation of chemicals in the U.S. is a $40 billion a year industry, representing almost 8% of the chemical industry's cost of sales. Chemical transportation by rail represents 12.6% of revenue for large freight Class I railroads, making storage and safety an important factor for railroad industry success. Ferric chloride, a preferred wastewater treatment chemical, is a moderately strong Lewis Acid used in sewage treatment, drinking water production as well as a metal etchant for copper and stainless steel. The favored mode of transportation for this chemical is by railcar. At a railway station in the Southeast, aqueous ferric chloride is contained in bulk tanks prior to it being transported into sewage treatment plants. Ferric chloride is used as a wastewater coagulant, ideal for process treatment as it absorbs phosphorus and other heavy metals that creates a sludge. This sludge byproduct with its contaminants is then separated from the water and treated before disposal. A non-contact level solution was required for this application due to tank height and caustic contents. EchoSpan® is the perfect measurement application due to it's 32.8' (10m) range, simple push button configuration and is ideally suited for corrosive liquids with its PVDF transducer and NEMA 4X enclosure.

Water Storage & Distribution Tank

Large-scale water storage in dry arid climates is an important buffer against rainfall variability. Some parts of the world can go months or even years with little to no rainfall. This makes clean, drinkable water a precious commodity and reliable cost-efficient water storage methods absolutely essential. Remember, you can live 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water. At this ranch in Texas, a 15 ft water storage tank is holding 9,000 gallons of fresh water for livestock when water is in short supply. Relay 1 is set to open a valve to empty the tank at 14.3 ft and relay 2 closes a valve to fill the tank at 5 ft. EchoSwitch® II is perfect for applications dealing with simple valve and pump control. EchoSwitch® II has 3 programmable relays that allows the user to control 1 pump or valve with 2 alarms, 2 pumps (lead-lag) with 1 alarm, 2 pumps (duplexing) with 1 alarm or 3 independent switch point alarms. If you require simple control and ease of configuration, then EchoSwitch® II is the solution you have been looking for.

Cooling Tower Wastewater Storage & Reuse

Wastewater from cooling towers, also known as blow-down, can reach temperatures over 100°F as well as contain chemical residues and mineral deposits. Before this wastewater can be reused or released back into the environment, it must be treated and cooled. This is accomplished by storing the used water in a holding tank to allow the water to cool and be transferred to the next stage. Because this water may contain toxins that are harmful to plant and aquatic life, accurate measurement of the water level is critical to prevent overfilling. At this power plant an EchoSwitch II is maintaining level of wastewater in a large fiberglass tank buried underground. The EchoSwitch II is equipped with two relays; one high alarm and one low alarm, directly interfacing to a PLC for pump control. At high alarm the pump starts and moves water to the next stage of treatment. At low alarm the pump turns off to prevent burn out and allows tank to fill again. The EchoSwitch II is perfect for applications involving local area pump control. It is a reliable non-contact level solution to replace your stainless steel float tree that will corrode or fill with sediment. "We Do Your Level Best".

HVAC Bulk Water Level Process Control

Bulk water storage tanks are used in conjunction with large HVAC installations to generate chilled water, resulting in better building temperature control. The chilled water is used to cool and dehumidify HVAC air in sizable commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. Bulk storage water tanks can also serve to provide some or all of the buildings fire protection water storage. At this facility, the chilled water storage system cools water at night using off-peak electricity. In this application a relatively standard chiller is run at night to produce an ice pile. Water is circulated through the ice pile during the day to produce chilled water that is then used for heat exchange to provide cool air for the buildling. The EchoSonic II ultrasonic transmitter chosen for bulk water tank measurement automatically compensates for temperature allowing for accurate measurement. In addition, EchoSonic II level transmitters have broad application. They can also be used for measurement of corrosive, ultrapure, and dirty liquids by performance optimization through Digital Signal Processing, or DSP. The EchoSonic® transmitter's DSP, auto-adaptive filter enable any operator with plug and play installation, simplified and optimized signal output filtering as well as obstacle recognition, decreasing false signal detection for high or low water storage levels.

Power Generation Sump Level Control

Thermal electric power plants make electricity by converting water into high-pressure steam that drive turbines. Used steam then passes through cooling towers where it condenses back to water for recirculation. US power plants draw in more than 200 billion gallons of water per day. The reliable management of water cooling, containment and delivery is core to their process. Here, an EchoSwitch II multi-point ultrasonic level switch-controller is mounted over a concrete sump. The sensor monitors water level and automatically empties the sump when full.
