Water Treatment Level Measurement |
Globally, 1.32 quintillion gallons of water will be consumed in 2011. That number will increase by 16.9 billion gallons in 2012. Agriculture accounts for 70% of the overall total while industrial use accounts for 20% and domestic use accounts for 10%. All of this water must be processed according to industry standards in order to produce safe water for each intended use. At this water treatment plant four EchoSonic II transmitters are measuring to separate applications. The first application is controlling two sodium chlorate tanks. The sodium chlorate will be used in the creation of chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide is a powerful biocide that is a more effective disinfectant than chlorine alone against water borne viruses, bacteria and protozoa. However, chlorine dioxide is many times used in high pH environments, which must later be neutralized before the water can be potable. This is where the second application comes into play. Two EchoSonic II transmitters are measuring sulfuric acid used to reduce pH levels to normal levels by neutralizing alkaline water. These two processes together will create potable water that is safe for human consumption. Click to view |

Water Tower Level Measurement |
Water towers play a vital role in both rural and urban communities. In rural communities, water towers release stored water in times of peak demand, drought or during power outages when electrical pumps can no longer bring fresh water to homes and farms. In urban communities, water towers release water for everyday utilization as well as provide a reserve for fire containment in large metropolitan high-rises and high-density districts. Urban safety for fire prevention relies upon pressure from fire hydrants; however, during peak usage conventional pumps may not provide enough pressure to reach such heights. Water towers provide an alternative storage option to tackle this problem by utilizing gravity feed to develop requisite pressure to fulfill these purposes. In addition, water towers reduce demand for electricity, as pumps do not need to constantly cycle to provide fresh water. In this application an EchoSonic II is measuring water level within a concrete water tower. Making sure that water is stored to required levels effects the lives of 5,000 residents within this region. When reliability and repeatability are essential to your level measurement process, EchoSonic II is your liquid level solution. Click to view |

Microelectronics Waste Acid Recovery Level Measurement |
Waste acid from microfabrication can be problematic for many microelectronics manufacturers. Wet etching is used to etch semiconductor components and is extremely hazardous to the environment. Therefore, spill prevention in this application is critical. If any waste acid were to overflow and enter the environment both OSHA and the EPA could slap the manufacturer with steep fines. In the past acid waste would simply be disposed of by electronics manufacturers; however, political pressure to reduce toxic chemical emissions into the environment and the cost of disposing these pollutants has become uneconomical. This leaves only one viable option, recovery and reuse. Waste acid is now collected, reprocessed and reused many times over before disposal. In this application a major electronics manufacturer collects spent acid in a sump for later processing and reuse. Two EchoPod DL14's are used as a redundant back up to prevent any overflow. EchoPod is perfect for this application due to its 4-20 mA output and four programmable relays for switch, pump or valve control and fail-safety. EchoPod also works well in corrosive environments with its type 6P polycarbonate enclosure.

Turbine Cooling Water Level Measurement |
Electric power plants produce 4.1 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually for both residential and commercial uses. The majority of this energy is produced using steam turbines. Combined heat power plants and conventional power plants turn water into steam through combustion of fossil fuels and then convert steam into energy. As water is heated, steam rises from the boiling water and spins a steam turbine. The generator, in turn, converts its mechanical energy to electrical energy based on the relationship between magnetism and electricity. Because these turbines have a tendency to overheat, they also use water-cooling to keep temperatures within a desired range. Correct water level management is essential to keep recommended temperatures within the turbine to prevent warping of the turbine. This application is managed by monitoring water level in an open flume. The EchoSonic LU29 combined with the DataView LI55 is perfect for maintaining level. The EchoSonic LU29 will keep your business moving full steam ahead.

Gulf Oil Dispersant Level Measurement |
During Q2 2010 the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico dominated the global news. The unprecedented spill threatened sea life, the $2.6 billion-a-year commercial fishing industry in Louisiana, and stifled imports and exports through the Port of South Louisiana, the nations busiest port. The disaster in the Gulf was a tragic event, but the crisis was not without Flowline level opportunity. It became a testing ground for a new technique where a potent mix of chemicals was sprayed in an effort to remove oil sheen from the surface. The mix of chemicals collectively known as "dispersants" were deployed in an attempt to break up the millions of gallons of oil spilled, allowing it to decompose or evaporate before washing ashore. As in all crises, resolution speed is key. More dispersants were requested than were available. Even though
these chemicals were in high demand, EPA regulations regarding the daily usage of dispersants impeded implementation. Accurate production storage measurements had to be documented by the dispersant manufacturer prior to its shipment and application into the Gulf. To solve this problem, storage tanks were equipped with Flowline EchoSonic II non-contact ultrasonic sensors in combination with our DataView level display to quickly and accurately provide inventory management. Wastewater Treatment / Open Channel Flow |
Wastewater treatment facilities commonly use V-Notch Weir applications to prevent solids from passing through to the clarification and treatment processes. Particulates fall to the bottom as the clearer water passes over the weir. But how do you measure the amount of water that is passing over the weir onto the next stage? That is where the open channel flow capabilities of the Echosonic LU27 shine. The LU27 can be configured to measure flow rate of wastewater entering a trough and passing over a V-Notch Weir The LU27?s capabilities can be further extended by adding the DataView LI55 controller to monitor very simple flow profiles using the display's advanced features. The Dataview LI55 allows for 2 or 4 programmable relays, and an isolated 4-20 mA repeater. Offering the capability for automatic pump shut-off, or to increase/decrease flow rate. Click to view |

Cooling Tower Level Measurement |
Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer heat to the atmosphere. Common applications include cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, chemical plants, power stations and building cooling. As an industry standard, float valves are used to monitor the water level and replenish as needed. If the city water pressure is high, the life span of these float valves is shortened due to hammer effect, usually only lasting 2-3 years. Additionally, float valves require a separate water line into the cooling tower increasing installation expense, often higher in cold areas where the pipe must be insulated. Here an EchoSonic II ultrasonic level transmitter is monitoring the level of water in the system, sending a continuous 4-20 mA signal back to the maintenance building. The signal, coupled to a controller, activates a pump by the chiller and a S solenoid valve adding make up water into the system without running an additional water line. The same signal is then repeated from the controller to the building's SCADA, allowing continuous monitoring of the make up water in the cooling tower.
