Globally, 1.32 quintillion gallons of water will be consumed in 2011. That number will increase by 16.9 billion gallons in 2012. Agriculture accounts for 70% of the overall total while industrial use accounts for 20% and domestic use accounts for 10%. All of this water must be processed according to industry standards in order to produce safe water for each intended use.

At this water treatment plant four EchoSonic II transmitters are measuring to separate applications. The first application is controlling two sodium chlorate tanks. The sodium chlorate will be used in the creation of chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide is a powerful biocide that is a more effective disinfectant than chlorine alone against water borne viruses, bacteria and protozoa. However, chlorine dioxide is many times used in high pH environments, which must later be neutralized before the water can be potable.

This is where the second application comes into play. Two EchoSonic II transmitters are measuring sulfuric acid used to reduce pH levels to normal levels by neutralizing alkaline water. These two processes together will create potable water that is safe for human consumption.
