The overall green building market LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), both non-residential and residential, is forecasted to double from today's $36-49 billion market size to $96-140 billion by 2013. Every business day, $464 million worth of construction registers with LEED.

At this LEED-certified building in Montreal, Canada, a pH neutralization system has been installed to neutralize laboratory waste. The system is designed to neutralize unpredictable and small discharge volume by incorporating a batch process utilizing level measurement for acid waste neutralization.

This system's level measurement application attributes are as follows: 4 ultrasonic sensors were installed to accomplish this task. 3 EchoPods and 1 EchoSonic II. The first EchoPod is installed in a grease trap that is where the process starts. As the grease trap fills up, the pump will start pumping water out into the main neutralizing tank on which the EchoSonic II is installed. The EchoSonic sensor monitors the volume of the neutralizing tank and depending on the correct level conditions, it will start neutralizing the waste. The other two EchoPods are installed on an acid and a caustic tank, allowing for real-time monitoring of chemical storage and usage.

The main challenge of this project was the lack of information concerning the amount of water being discharged to the system. Using a ultrasonic level transmitter allowed for the storage of data into a PLC controller, developing a volume discharge profile, calculating the time required for neutralization and determining the amount of chemicals used during the process. This information is then used to make any necessary adjustments in the set points to optimize neutralization time and chemical consumption resultant in reducing operating costs.
