Today, the global population of beluga whales stands at about 100,000. The beluga is listed as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, making the preservation and rehabilitation of belugas a priority. Due to pollution and overfishing of their food supply in the Arctic, their numbers are dwindling. Maintaining a healthy, natural environment is crucial to their success in captivity.

At this aquarium a beluga whale tank is holding 530,000 gallons (2 million liters) of salt water mixed from a separate hidden makeup tank. The consistency of the makeup tank is critical, fluctuating chemical conditions can have a negative impact on the beluga whales. Saline and pH conditions need to be constantly monitored and kept within acceptable ranges. To accomplish the makeup water is introduced slowly into the main tank so the conditions do not change drastically. As the water level drops in the main tank, the makeup tank will slowly inject the water back into the main tank.

In this application reliable level measurement is imperative. If the whale is subjected to an environment with little or no salt water, the whale will begin to absorb too much water and will die. That is why this aquarium has chosen an EchoPod DL14. Its 4-20 mA signal can work with any PLC or SCADA and its 4 programmable relays provide switch, pump, valve control and fail-safety. In this application, the the volume control of water allows for the pH levels to be maintained. This allows the system to inject the necessary chemicals that would have the least impact to the water conditions.
