According to a recent economic study the global paints and coatings industry will reach $92.5 billion in 2011. The automotive OEM paint and coatings will account for $35.4 billion, roughly 38% of the total market. Although car sales have slid in the past 5 years in the U.S., automotive sales in Asia continue to grow at an annualized rate of 10-15%. As more cars are produced, more paint must be manufactured to cover the vehicles.

Automotive paint is created in a three-part process. First, powdered pigment is added to a mixer. Next, resin is added which binds to the pigment creating a thick and sticky colored liquid. The last stage of the process involves reducing the thick, sap-like paint into a more viscous, sprayable form so that the paint can be applied quickly and uniformly. Cars produced in the last 15 years have also had the ability to add metallic or mica flakes to create a shiny, reflective coat.
At this large global manufacturer of automotive OEM coatings, the EchoTouch LU20-5001-IS is measuring the amount of paint in a stainless steel mixing tank. In this process, liquid level is vital as accuracy determines the correct consistency and color of each coat. Major automotive manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Toyota have very little tolerance for incorrect color matches. The EchoTouch LU20-5001-IS can prevent these inconsistencies through its 0.125" (3mm) resolution and 0.25% of range accuracy.
