| Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer heat to the atmosphere. Common applications include cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, chemical plants, power stations and building cooling. As an industry standard, float valves are used to monitor the water level and replenish as needed. If the city water pressure is high, the life span of these float valves is shortened due to hammer effect, usually only lasting 2-3 years. Additionally, float valves require a separate water line into the cooling tower increasing installation expense, often higher in cold areas where the pipe must be insulated. Here an EchoSonic II ultrasonic level transmitter is monitoring the level of water in the system, sending a continuous 4-20 mA signal back to the maintenance building. The signal, coupled to a controller, activates a pump by the chiller and a S solenoid valve adding make up water into the system without running an additional water line.The same signal is then repeated from the controller to the building's SCADA, allowing continuous monitoring of the make up water in the cooling tower. |
